The Radical Design world of Ghislaine Viñas
She is the irreverent and gifted designer she is now thanks to her multicultural background. She was born in the Netherlands but spent the majority of her childhood in South Africa until she was 18 years old. Nine months later, she made the decision to move to the United States to continue her studies in Philadelphia, and a new chapter began.
The interior design came to light as a bombshell in Ghislaine’s life after she moved to New York City. When she got lost and ended up taking the wrong train home. After getting off at the wrong stop, she saw a modular furniture company and walked inside to see if they had any openings. And she ended up working for the company for 7 years and had the chance to gain more knowledge about the furniture industry before the biggest opportunity of her career presented itself in the form of a collaboration with a woman who was looking to open an office, thanks to the introduction of a close friend.
After succeeding, Ghislaine Viñas made the decision to strike out on her own in 1999, founding what is now one of New York’s most renowned and award-winning studios. Since its opening, the studio has maintained its original character and continues to serve as Ghislaine Vias’s creative laboratory. The Dutch-born interior designer claimed in one of her interviews that juggling her roles as an entrepreneur, a designer, a wife, and a mother was the most challenging aspect of the process.
Ghislaine Viñas deviates significantly from the norms of the design world with her innate interest in dramatic compositions and playful color contrasts.
