The London Design Festival honors and supports London as the global center of Design. Ben Evans CBE and Sir John Sorrell CBE founded the London Design Festival in 2003. Their idea was to develop an annual event that would highlight London’s innovation by bringing in the nation’s top thinkers, practitioners, retailers, and educators to provide an unforgettable celebration of design. On March 25, 2003, the first Festival was officially launched at Bloomberg, with participation from organizations in the fields of design, education, government, and London. Its next edition will happen from September 16–24, 2023.

London Design Festival 2022
The 2022 Festival had surely cast a bold new light on the city and made the familiar fresh. London is known for its design, and it has one of the biggest creative economies of any city in the world. However, the impact of the pandemic, Brexit, and cost-of-living crises is expected to disproportionately harm the creative industries, resulting in a disastrous setback for the industry. In light of this, the 20th anniversary of the London Design Festival was timely and motivated by a desire to keep the city at the forefront of creativity and culture. Through its program of jaw-dropping, must-see installations, museum exhibits, the Design Districts, which highlight hubs of creative activity throughout the capital, and the Global Design Forum, the Festival’s thought leadership program, brought together creative leaders to exchange ideas and solutions for some of the most pressing issues of our time.

London Design Festival 2022 Projects
HENGE
Henge is an LSI Stone, Stanton, and Webb Yates Engineers initiative in collaboration with Experimentadesign. It was designed in the style of Neolithic stone buildings that “provide a space isolated from the outside world.”
HENGE will be in situ at Wren Landing until the end of October 2022.
INTO SIGHT
A life-sized media platform by Sony Design uses sensory effects to turn plain border surfaces into an endless vision by varying light, color, and sound. The goal is to collect and unearth fresh information about the coexistence of physical and meta worlds.
SWIVEL
The swiveling chairs by Sabine Marcelis added color and contrast to this space by using natural stone and patterns in contrast to the surrounding man-made structures, such as the Brutalist Centre Point and modern glass buildings.
20 Things: Earl’s Court
Jacob was able to appreciate the range of what Earl’s Court has to offer by exploring it in his own special way. From housing complexes and multinational supermarkets to a variety of communities, defining transportation linkages, and everything in between, he observes, “You truly get a slice across the city here.”
London Design Festival 2022 Medal Winners
The London Design Festival awards four London Design Medals each year to recognize the contributions that well-known designers and up-and-coming artists have made to London and the industry.
The London Design Festival: Global Design Forum
The curated thought leadership program for the London Design Festival, Global Design Forum, celebrates design and the individuals influencing its future. Regenerative futures, new opportunities in digital design, identity and inclusivity, design to shape behavior, connecting communities, participation in design, and design for crisis and recovery are just a few of the topics that were included in the program for 2022 that were both challenging and exciting for designers today. A Forum where speakers from around the globe’s design community were able to present fresh viewpoints on how to make the design more approachable, inclusive, sustainable, and at the forefront of change.
The London Design Festival’s next edition will happen from September 16–24, 2023.
