California-based In addition to more than 40 wineries, Howard J. Backen of Backen & Backen – Architecture | Lifestyle | Wellbeing has a long list of housing, retail, and hospitality projects that interact with and are influenced by the West Coast settings the company has helped shape.
The designs by the AD100 designer and his company blend a minimal look with organic materials and vast, dramatic areas that blissfully frame the surroundings. The company’s accomplishments, especially in light of the fundamental ideas it created for companies like Pottery Barn and RH, have expanded its legacy to include how we perceive domestic life in America from coast to coast.
2. Kelly Wearstler
Before Kelly Wearstler made a name for herself, New York was the undisputed hub of the American interior design industry. Rose Tarlow has furnished the houses of celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and David Geffen with soulful, rustic furnishings in solid, neutral colors and an appreciation for organic materials, especially all things wood. She is also a great believer in collaboration; she collaborated on her own tranquil retreat in Provence with renowned Belgian landscape architects Peter and Jacques Wirtz.
4. Madison Cox
Madison Cox maintains a low profile, practically just appearing as a shadow of himself online. But his creations speak for him.
The garden designer has created some of the most impressive public and private gardens, including the garden at the Aga Khan Centre in London and the 1,000-acre landscape of Anne Bass’s Connecticut estate and Marella Agnelli’s Ain Kassimou. Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé made Cox’s Villa Oasis in Marrakech renowned, and Cox is also responsible for the building of a dining pavilion on the property.
