INTERIOR DESIGN INTERVIEW WITH KANIKA B. KHURANA FROM KANIKA DESIGN
Your International Travels Have Influenced Your Design Sensibilities. Can You Share a Specific Experience or Location That Has Left a Lasting Impact on Your Design Work?

I began traveling in 2008 and haven’t stopped since. My approach has always been “less is more,” and the simplicity of Scandinavian design has greatly influenced my design process. Through traveling to various parts of the world, I have been inspired by the use of contrasting colors and eclectic elements. Traveling has allowed me to witness colors in different settings and environments, challenging my previous assumptions about color combinations. This experience has greatly influenced my love for using colors.
Inspired by the Look
You Mentioned Your Love for Bold Colors and Mixing Different Design Styles. Could You Tell Us About a Project Where You Successfully Integrated Contrasting Elements to Create a Harmonious Space?

In this Kitchen and Dining remodel project, the use of orange and green, which are contrasting colors, adds depth and visual interest to the design. Orange was chosen to signify warmth, while green represents a cool color. The combination of these colors creates a dynamic and balanced aesthetic. The style of the project is a blend of modern and mid-century, which further enhances the contrasting elements. Notably, the butcher block used as a kitchen countertop adds an inviting and tactile element to the space.
Can You Share a Memorable Project That Truly Reflects Your Design Philosophy and Approach? What Made It Stand Out for You?

All of my projects are special to me. One project that stands out is the living space remodel. I was inspired to create a warm and inviting space with a unique room layout. I love using bold colors and adding natural elements like wood to create a peaceful atmosphere that brings a sense of calmness to the room. This project offered the ideal opportunity to design a living space for guests and a cozy reading room for our clients, where they can lose themselves in books for hours.
How Do You Approach the Challenge of Balancing Aesthetics With Functionality in Your Interior Design Projects?

When someone hires me as a designer, they are looking for a space that is aesthetically pleasing and, at the same time, functional for everyday living. It’s important that people feel comfortable in the space, especially when they have guests. Therefore, I emphasize the importance of creating designs that strike a balance between beauty and functionality, ensuring that the spaces I create are not only visually appealing but also conducive to comfortable and livable experiences.

San Francisco Bay Area is Known for Its Diverse Architectural Styles. How Do You Incorporate the Local Architectural Context Into Your Designs?

San Francisco Bay Area has a diverse population and there are lots of design inspirations all around. Whether it’s the Victorian houses of San Francisco, the Craftsman bungalows of the East Bay, or the mid-century modern homes of Silicon Valley, I strive to create designs that work well with the existing architecture of every space. As an example, if I’m designing for a modern home, I might focus on clean lines, open floor plans, and integrating sustainable materials to complement the contemporary aesthetic.
Collaboration With Clients is a Key Aspect of Your Design Process. How Do You Ensure That the Final Design Truly Reflects the Client’s Vision and Needs?

We always present our designs in 3D, which helps our clients visualize the final result. To ensure that the final design reflects the client’s vision and needs, we offer full-service options where our team handles the entire project execution, including construction.
Many Clients Are Concerned About Staying Within Budget During a Design Project. What Strategies Do You Employ to Ensure Cost-effective Yet Stunning Outcomes?

I always advise our clients to begin with a budget that they do not want to exceed and then work backwards. When planning the execution of any project, our team also considers the possibility of unexpected challenges. Therefore, having a budget sheet that includes all expenses is always very helpful.

Can You Walk Us Through Your Typical Design Process, From Initial Consultation to Project Completion, and Highlight What Sets It Apart From Other Firms?

Our design approach is always client-centric. We begin every project by conducting design exercises to understand the client’s style and functional needs for each space. Following this, we start our research to plan the design of the space, taking into consideration the client’s requirements and available budget. We always present our designs in 3D, which helps our clients visualize the final result. Our primary focus when working with clients is to ensure that the space is finished according to the original design. To achieve this, we offer a full-service option where our team handles the entire project execution, including construction.
What Advice Do You Have for Individuals Who Are Looking to Refresh Their Living Spaces on a Smaller Budget? Any Diy Tips or Quick Wins You Can Share?

I always recommend refreshing the look of any room seasonally by changing out pillows, rugs, curtains, and even swapping decor items such as vases, candle holders, and table centerpieces. Additionally, changing the paint color for a room is a great DIY option that can make a big impact on any space. It allows you to completely redefine the mood and style of the room, whether you opt for a bold and vibrant color or a soothing and calming shade.
Lastly, What Trends or Innovations Do You See Shaping the Future of Interior Design, and How Do You Plan to Stay at the Forefront of These Developments in Your Practice?
